Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program

Melton Secondary College aims to connect our students with vibrant and engaging learning communities that extend beyond the classroom and help develop our students as resilient and innovative learners. We recognise that our students are immersed in a technology rich world and aim to guide them to become flexible, efficient, conscientious, creative, safe and responsible digital citizens. As part of these endeavours, we have been actively increasing the role of technology in our teaching in recent years, adopting new online systems and using government support to increase students’ access to technology and digital resources.

As most parents will be aware, the main funding for this growth, the Federal Government’s Digital Education Revolution (DER) program came to a close in mid-2013. In response to this and the ending of other funded programs, Melton Secondary College is adopting a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. This will require students in specific year levels to bring their own personal digital learning device (laptop or tablet computer) to school on a daily basis.

As of 2016, students starting in Year 7 will be required to bring their own device (laptops, netbooks or tablets) to school. Students in Years 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 will be encouraged to bring their own devices. For year groups not required to join the BYOD program in 2016, Melton Secondary College has laid out an implementation schedule for them to join the program in subsequent years- see below

  •       Y7 and 8                                2017
  •       Y7, 8, 9 and 10                      2018
  •       Y7, 8, 9, 10 and 11                2019
  •       all year levels                        2020

Any device used for the BYOD program must follow the conditions outlined in the schools BYOD policy, Acceptable User Agreement (AUA) and meet the Minimum Device Specification.

Devices that are approved will be allowed access to the schools network and permitted for use in class as directed by their classroom teachers.

More information on the BYOD policy and the Minimum Device Specification can be found using the links below.

Available Software for BYOD

Office 365 Education for Students - All students enrolled at Melton Secondary College will have a FREE Office 365 Education account set up for them which provides access to online versions of commonly used Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This eliminates the need for students to purchase any Office software applications for their chosen BYOD. It also allows students to install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, and Access on up to 5 PCs or Macs and Office apps on other mobile devices including Android, iPad®, and Windows tablets. Also included is 1TB of free OneDrive storage, managed by the school.
