Student Support Services

Student Wellbeing Support

The Student Wellbeing team at Melton Secondary College comprises of two Student Wellbeing Counsellors, a School Chaplain and a Health Promotion Nurse. The team is overseen by the Student Services Leader and Assistant Principal.

At Melton Secondary College, we understand that schools play a vital role in the social and emotional development of young people. We know that young people learn best when they have a positive sense of wellbeing, resilience, feel safe, supported and connected as a school community.

Our approach to the Wellbeing of our Students is to provide a range of proactive programs including Chic, Circle Time, Blokes, Rage, Drumbeat and the Festival for Healthy Living as well as provide counselling support when specific individual needs arise. We encourage and facilitate Mediations to support students in building positive peer relationships. We run a daily Breakfast Club which all our students are invited to attend.  Students learn the importance of eating a healthy breakfast to enhance learning while building positive rapports with staff and each other. A new initiative at Melton Secondary College is the Koori Homework Club which is facilitated in conjunction with Djerrawarh, AIME and the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation.

The team works closely with outside agencies including the Food bank, Young Carers Victorian, Melton Youth Agency Network, Djerriwarrh Community, Education and School Focussed Youth Services, Koori Engagement Support Officer, the AIME program, Melton City Council and additional support is available through the Melton Network Student Support Service Officers team.

Another integral aspect to promoting the wellbeing of our students is the Year 7 and 8 Tutorial program. Year 7 and 8 Tutorial utilises the Rock and Water Program to support students in the development of social competencies, body awareness, emotional awareness and self-awareness. It also focuses on organisational skills and goal setting. Positive Education approaches are applied to support the growth of positive wellbeing.

We support families in need with State School Relief applications. Students who live in Out of Home Care are provided with regular support through Student Support Group Meetings.

Confidentiality is respected.

Program for Students with Disabilities

A comprehensive program to integrate students with additional needs is available at Melton Secondary College:

  • The Program for Students with Disabilities comprises of a Learning Support Teacher and Learning Support Aides. It is overseen by the Student Services Leader and Assistant Principal.
  • Programs are developed and implemented in consultation with parents, staff and learning support aides.
  • A life skills program supports the needs of students at their own level of need.
  • Student Support Group (SSG) meetings are held regularly to develop Individual Learning Plans and to discuss student progress.
  • Small group and one to one tuition is available for those students who require modified timetables and curriculum.
  • An extensive transition program is made available to students with additional needs as they move from Grade 6 into Secondary school.
